A Legend of Devotion from Galway’s Claddagh Village
According to tradition, the design dates back to the 17th century and is often linked to the story of Richard Joyce, a young man from Claddagh village in Galway.
Captured by Mediterranean pirates and sold into slavery, Joyce learned goldsmithing under his master in North Africa. During his captivity, he crafted a ring as a tribute to the woman he hoped to return to. The heart, crown, and hands told his story — and when he finally came home, he found she had waited for him. They were soon wed, never to part again.
While the story is legend, the love it celebrates is very real.
