An Enduring Irish Legend
The Claddagh design is often linked with the oral tradition of Richard Joyce, a young man from the village of Claddagh in Galway. As legend tells it, he was taken at sea and forced into servitude under a Moorish goldsmith. Over the years, he learned the art of jewellery-making and fashioned the first Claddagh ring for the woman he longed to return to. When he finally came home, he found she had waited faithfully.
They married—and the design he created has become a lasting emblem of Irish devotion.
While the legend cannot be proven, its spirit lives on in every Claddagh worn today.
