A Folk Tale of Devotion from the Village of Claddagh

The origins of the Claddagh are often linked to a 17th-century legend. According to tradition, a young man named Richard Joyce from Claddagh in Galway was captured by pirates and enslaved. While in North Africa, he became a skilled goldsmith and designed a ring symbolising his love for the woman he hoped to return to. When he was finally freed, he found she had waited for him. They married, and his design became one of Ireland’s most enduring symbols.
